Literature Text

Where can you go when your dreams are dead
What can you say when it's all been said
You reached for the gold but it turned to lead
You're ready to go but the light's still red

He feels the walls around him
Like he's living in a cage
The only thing that keeps him sane
Is cutting loose his rage

So he screams out all his anger
But they'll never understand
Why it's just too much a burden
To live up to their demands

He can only be who he is
Still they insist that he be more
By the time they've had their way with him
They leave him feeling like a whore

Where can you go when your dreams are dead
What can you say when it's all been said
You reached for the gold but it turned to lead
You're ready to go but the light's still red

You walk this world alone
Forever on your own
And it seems like it'll always be the same
A never ending fight
To find the path that's right
You're tired of playing all their stupid games

A hard and cold exterior shell
But I've seen through her bluff
‘Cause underneath's a heart that's pure
A diamond in the rough

She always tries to tell herself
She won't let love back in
‘Cause loving only leads to hurt
So she'll hold it all within

She plays the part to protect herself
From the heartache and the pain
But you only need look in her eyes
To see she's lost again

Where can you go when your dreams are dead
What can you say when it's all been said
You reached for the gold but it turned to lead
You're ready to go but the light's still red

You walk this world alone
Forever on your own
And it seems like it'll always be the same
A never ending fight
To find the path that's right
You're tired of playing all their stupid games

It seems that we are each alone
A legion of the lost
Forefathers sold our innocence
But we'll pay the final cost

The sun will soon be going down
The hour is getting late
The thunder clouds are rolling in
This storm will not abate

And as the end approaches
We'll man the battle line
‘Cause in our darkest hour
Is our greatest chance to shine

We walk this world alone
Forever on our own
And it seems like it'll always be the same
A never ending fight
To find the path that's right
I'm tired of playing all their stupid games

I put this under "song" because that how I was trying to write it... but since I'm about as musically inclined as a waterbuffalo in heat, there's no actual music to it. Wasnt that a lovely image?

Anyway, this is a couple years old now, with parts of it having been written quite a while before I actually put it all together. Chose it for this week's submission largely due to a journal I read just recently and I thought it might strike a chord with someone, at least. Guess I'll find out. ;)

Edit: I took Causti's advice on the last line of the fourth verse. Hopefully the rythm flows better now. Thanks, Causti!

I really can relate to this poem/song - maybe you can find a musician out there to put it to music *shrugs*
